Traveling with a Toddler!!!
Updated tips for traveling with a 21 month old!! Berlin to Perth 20 hour flight with 2 stop overs and traveling ALONE I researched and searched for tips and I added all my findings together and I can safely say that it was very successful flight . Iyla was a gem!!! I was so worried because I would be by myself . Tip 1. Before booking your flight depending if your baby is 2 or under you can pre book a bassinet seat! Singapore airlines are awsome! Flown 3 times now with them to Aus and they are so friendly and lovely to you which helps. Emirates and Qantas also have this option too. If you want to go with another airline that doesn’t have a bassinet seat option then I suggest buying a whole seat because you don’t want your little one sleeping on you for 12 hours! You want them to be comfy! Tip 2 Pack wrapped presents and new presents I spent 10 euros in the dollar store and got sticker books, barbie doll, fake phone, necklaces, textures/ pencils, etc I then wrapped then all up separately so it’s exciting when they see it. She loved all of them . I would give it take off and landing and in between but she was sleeping most of the take offs! Tip 3 Bring any electronic device that you have and charge it. I took my portable DVD player , phone and computer. I uploaded toddler apps but sadly she didn’t play with any of them. She watched a lot of movies and times like this you need these devices. Don’t rely on the plane movies because then they have to sit on your lap and if your eating or something it’s difficult . I also got kids headphones which fit her perfect for 15 euros which have a limit to the volume so they can’t turn it loud! Tip 4 Take snacks for YOU and baby! I took almonds, walnuts , dried cranberry and blueberries . I took 2 coconut waters , 2 bottles of milk ( I needed more) , so I would take 4 just in case, I had a whole carton of almond milk but thought it would be to much I will take it next time just in case. When traveling with kids you can have over 100ml which is great!!! Also had apple purée, rice crackers with peanut butter, fruit bars . Whatever your into . Tip 5 Pre order your meal on the plane. I’m vegetarian so I have to do this anyway. You get your meal first and don’t have to wait also it’s much better food when you pre order. If there is a toddler meal then order that too it’s for free :) Tip 6 Pack spare clothes for both of you. I packed Iylas onsie (pjs) , a change of clothes and a spare body suit just in case. And mums or dads , underwear, pants and shirt. This made me feel a little but refreshed before landed into Perth . I took around 10 diapers just in case! I had 2 left . Tip 7 If you can! Make the stop over as short as possible . Ours was 1.5 hours and it’s perfect , have a quick run around and go to the next flight . Really play with them when you land so they get a bit tired . Some people suggest to stay there over night , I say bang it out and get it over and done with !! At this age they have a very short attention spand! Tip 8 Bring a small t towel or flannel , you never no what mess you will have to clean up! ( I didn’t use it ) Tip 9 Lollipops for the major backup. I had to use the lollipop trick only once! Good for taking off and landing too because they are swallowing and sucking to realise pressure for their ears. Only down side is they get sticky but hey you have 12 hours left may as well give them a wipe down and change them. Tip 10 Try to stick to the time schedule back home! I kept Berlin time on my phone and went by that. So she had a nap usual time and went to bed kind of around her bed time but only slept 4 hours , she then made up for it on the next flight . Tip 11 Be calm and in control. It’s super easy to have a meltdown at times like these but we rnt in a position too, with no help we need to be focused . I had this guy chatting my ear off and I was half listening to what he was saying I was paying close attention to Iylas signs and how I new she would let me no if she needed something. If bub is going crazy take a deep breathe and take a little walk up and down the plane screw it if people look at you with death stares , it should help and go say hi to the staff . Distraction is the key Tip 12 I took my amazing Tula carrier which made it easy if I needed to get her to sleep and going on and off the plane I would put her in the carrier ! Tip 13 I invested in a second hand Trunki! They are these little suitcases that kids can sit on and you wheel them along at the airport . We got a tiger one!!! It’s great because you can put baby’s things in there . I carried a little backpack for myself and few extra things for Iyla ! Keep it very simple when your on your own. They are expensive brand new but second hand about 20-30 bucks! Tip 14 If your partner can , get them to come with you to help you check in and see you off! Also arrange travel cot, stroller etc when you arrive at your destination. My mum had everything ready, car seat, travel cot and pram. If this is not possible then some airlines let you take the stroller all the way up to the plane . Good luck xxxx |
This is very interesting! When i was 9 days over due with Iyla, i went and got a pregnancy massage to induce labour. The lady was massaging my foot and she was like hmmm. Turns out my uterus pressure point (which is near the back of your ankle) was very tense so she massaged this out which made it relax and when i got home my waters started leaking!! very powerful stuff , so give those little precious toes a massage
Postpartum Care after baby is born
I wanna talk a bit about how to look after yourself after baby is born . We focus so much on the pregnancy and birth that when the time comes to have your baby it’s all very rushed to get into the swing of being a new mother. In India the mother stays home for 40 days and is given a massage every day as well as the baby! If we could only learn a few things from this tradition ! 1. Get help around the house , especially if you have had a c section you won’t be able to bend and pick things up for a few weeks . You look after the baby and someone needs to look after you for these precious 6 weeks ! Baby just needs Mumma and the mothers needs to be reminded to eat, shower and drink ! If visitors wanna come over get them to bring a dish or meal 2. Eat good wholesome food after baby is born , you will not only be helping baby but yourself by having more energy. Lots of smoothies , oats and iron rich foods. Take your pre natal vitamins still and a iron supplement, you lost a lot of fluid and blood when you gave birth so look after yourself just like you would if you where pregnant. 3. When baby sleeps you sleep! This one I found hard to do as I wanted to Get stuff done around the house but honestly rest and don’t feel guilty for sleeping all day . You have no sense of time when you have a newborn . Doesn’t matter if you feel like having a nap at 4pm with the baby go ahead and do it please! You are going to need it 4. If you feel like you rnt producing enough milk there is foods and supplements to help you . Don’t think that your body is broken when these things can be fixed . Fenugreek is amazing by increasing your milk supply and most of the mistakes are mummas rnt eating properly that’s why someone needs to be cooking your meals and making sure you eat . If you have no help around the house , start pre cooking meals and freeze them when your pregnant . Another option to increase your milk supply and to help with postnatal depression is getting your placenta encapsulated! It’s the best thing I ever did . It’s cost between 200-300 dollars but well worth it ! 5. Even thou your tired and so concentrated on the baby don’t forget that your a lover too. I no it seems crazy the first weeks but try spend as much time as possible together with your partner before he has to go back to work . Have a meal and look in each other’s eyes, talk about the birth and your new bundle. You have to share your love now with 2 people not just the baby . 6. If your nipples are sore these first weeks it’s normal they just shouldn’t be painful! Your breast rnt used of having a baby hanging off them so don’t stress you are probably doing it right and on the rare occasion if they continue to be painful in a week or 2 get help because it may be the latch isn’t right . You have to push thru the first week and get the nipples tough ! You may experience small contractions while feeding as the uterus is shrinking each time Stay strong ! I found cold cabbage leaves in the fridge and put them in your bra help relieve soreness. Lanonlin nipple cream Hot showers on the breasts Warm towels on the breasts Go topless ! Wear no bra around the house and air them out . Your suppose to leave the milk after baby has fed to keep them moist. Don’t use soap on your breasts this drys the nipples out which means makes it harder to toughen them up. Gel breast pads and put them in the fridge or normal breast pads keep them refrigerated 7. If any family members or friends wanna visit and ask what you need or want them to bring say food!! Pre made meals and fresh produce . You don’t want baby clothes or any other presents . Last thing you want to do is think about cooking a meal. 8. If you tore or have a nasty tear there is herbal flower baths that you can bathe in . Use a squeeze bottle with water to wash instead of wiping . Take it extra easy with bending and lifting . Bath in witch hazel pads also 9. It’s common to bleed from 2-6 weeks after having baby . It’s sucks after having 9 months off your period you get it in one lump sum . No tampons allowed only the big surfboard pads ! Your uterus take 6-8 weeks to shrink back to its original size ! 10. Having that first bowel moment on the toilet! It a scary feeling as you feel like another baby is going to come out ! It may be days before you go . High in fiber foods , prune juice, warm water and lots of fluids ! Mummas should be drinking at least 2 L of water a day!! Ask you midwife or doctor if you can take a supplement for it if it’s been longer then a week 11. Will we ever have sex again?! Yes trust me you will , it’s a very big change when you have a baby and let’s face it our primal instincts kick in when the male has done what he has to and breed then why do it again right? Humans have sex for pleasure ( and dolphins) while other animals do it to reproduce I kind of see it like this . Be patient and you can do it from 4-6 weeks if you like . I think i waited a little longer ! It feels very strange as it’s the first time your doing it as a mother not your old self. Invest in some lube or coconut oil if your worried if it still works down there . 12.Get fresh air and sun when you can ! When you feel well enough to leave the house go for a nice stroll and get that baby some vitamin D and yourself too . You spend a lot of time at home the first few weeks . Even let the sunshine come into the house. 13. Take your time to leave the house and don’t feel pressure from anyone . My mum was over from AUS and we went into the city when iyla was just 5 days old! I completely freaked out and cried in whole foods and we had to go back home it was only a 4 stop subway ride home . I wasn’t ready and wanted to be in the nest still. We had a nice big backyard so spent most my time there . 14. Please rest and enjoy your baby and don’t try be super woman all the time . Take a deep breather and let go :) |
TIPS FOR FLYING WITH BABIES!
So we did the 28 hr flight NYC to Perth (Aus) trip over christmas last year and iyla was 3 months old. We got so lucky, she slept pretty much the whole time and was on the boob alot! I was really paranoid because you hear that most babies have a problem with their ears, We recently came to Berlin from New York so that wasn’t as bad as the first trip but i was worried as she is way more mobile at 6 months she is such a wiggle worm. She again slept the whole way so i think we have a good travel buddy for life! She has to get used to it as we have family in 2 different countries!
Here are my travel tips!
-Make sure the airline you are flying with are baby friendly! We did ALOT of research as to which airline are good with babies. We had to get a bassinet seat and some airlines dont have these so best to find out . Singapore airline is great and highly recommend them!! British airways are great also but have a pretty bad bassinet system so i had to hold her the whole way. When they are 2 i think you have to buy a seat
-Feed them take off and landing if you can, or if they take the dummy/pacifier than this is good also as long as they are sucking. I found that if they are asleep its fine, this just helps with the pressure as the plane goes up. Iyla actually fell asleep while the plane was taking off so this was fine!
-People say travel during the day but right now i found traveling at night is better for us , For example 8.30pm flight or earlier or later, I found this helped with bed time, because they are semi sleepy try play with them lots at the airport. Put a blanket down and let them have play time before you hop on . If you cant do this then its going to be ok, no big deal u will survive!
-Even thou i never ever use panadol or any bad pain medicine for babies its always good to have for backup!! I had another fear of her getting a bad ear infection or something else on the plane for the 18hr flight and was wondering it would be the worst if i didnt have anything to help her just that little bit until we get off.
-Make sure you have diapers, wipes, spare baby clothes, blankets, burp clothes (spit up clothes), spare tops for yourself and your partner (we learnt the first time, spew everywhere)
-If they are teething dont forget your teething medicine or teething toys. Also other toys that will entertain them
-Check if your airline provides strollers, i no singapore airlines do and emirates. This helps with airport connections, we had a 12 hour stop over in singapore. If you have a baby carrier then great , but your back can only take so much.
-We thought that it helped breaking up the flight to Australia but if we are to do it again we will go all the way i think! We had a 12 hour stop over at a hotel in Singapore and i found this exhausting! I think just go for it! Traveling anywhere i think its best to go straight there.
-Take it easy on the first day of your arrival! Mega chill like you have never before. Usually we have a shower, then eat then have a morning nap, the little family. iyla is usually pretty happy after that. Babys and kids get freaked when they are in new places and its good not to over whelm them. If you are staying with family explain nicely that you have to take it easy and auntys and nannas and everyone else cant come over just yet, wait a day or 2! But they never can ha
-Try rent or borrow baby gear if you can so when you travel its not to much for you guys! My mother brought nearly everything second hand for us when we went there so we didnt have to bring a thing, we did have to invest in a car seat thou but we got that second had.
-If your breastfeeding drink lots of water on the plane it really took it out of me on the long flight and bring some snacks with you, dried mango and mixed nuts bag etc!
-Dont worry about what other people think about your baby crying on the plane, tell them to build a bridge and get over it! I mean try do everything you can to help baby not get to that point of loosing it
Hopefully this makes you feel more comfortable about traveling with a baby! I mean this is only for a 0-6 month old so i may have new tips in the coming months as she will be older and might have changed her game plan! Stay tuned

Teething Survival Guide!!!!
Iyla first started teeting when we where in Australia for chirssy , she was only 3 months old! Crazy she has only recently gotten 2 bottom teeth (at 6 months) at the same time! So they take a while to come but they can affect them for a while. Some signs of teething may be dribbling, always wanting to bite or chew on things, rosey cheeks, fussy, inflamed gums, red gums, refusing to eat, sleep problems! Too name a few ha
Iyla also had runny stools during this time but not all babies get this. Thats how i no she is teething and she gets very red cheeks and her gums swell. All babies are different.
So what i have learnt so far and im well aware i have a long way to go 2 years of teething right!!??
-You must invest in a Munchkin 2 Pack Fresh Food Feeder, its a dummy like shape and you can put foods or ice in there so baby sucks on it for relief. These are fantastic for frozen foods and ice blocks. If baby isnt old enough hold it for them. I put frozen banana, frozen blueberries, strawberries and ice in there (not all at once of course). You can also use this when bub starts to have solids and you dont have to worry about them choking!
- Brauer Teething relief medicine, This is an Australian brand i stoked up before coming back to the States. Its a natural medicine with no Paracetamol and No Aspirin Iyla responds well with this, i try not to use it alot but i find at night it gives the best results and during the day i can soothe her with boob or other teething toys
-Classic teething toys, the rubber ring that you put in the freezer, Sophie the giraffe is a favorite.
-I gave iyla the nipple from a bottle, just to test out if she liked it (trying to get her to take one) and she hasnt let go of it for 2 days! She must love the rubbery texture, so maybe give that a try. If your teet is small i suggest not to i got the big Avent teet.
-Breastfeed, and if they rnt into eating dont stress, they wont die of hunger and thirst! Its like us if we get sick we dont feel like eating well neither do they. Try them every so often if they rnt eating. If it happens longer then a few days and your worried then ask your doctor. If they are pooping and weeing then they are totally fine!
-Teething is not only stressful for baby but stressful for us so be patient and calm with yourself and your partner. Patience!!
-There was a time recently when iyla wasnt sleeping well for 2 nights, crying a lot and i was worried if i went in there then it would ‘stuff the sleeping pattern up’. I new she was teething and put her to bed like normal, and if she seemed fine i didnt bother with the teething medicine. I learnt quick. So before i feed her i gave her medicine i felt this helped a lot! I didn’t wait till she was screaming with pain.
-Get your ice cube tray, fill them up! I even put dialuted fruit juice in them. She is obsessed! Then i put them in her food mesher
-Amber teething beads. Now i never really no if this helps or not. Im to scared to take it off her, she has been wearing it for 3 months now! The natural oils of the amber releases. I take them off iyla like once a month or so and lay them in the sun or wash them in salt water. This takes all that bad teething energy away. They say to take it off them while sleeping but i never have and it seems to be going ok. They look super cute if they dont work anyways! But do your research on them
-A lady told Sam on the subway this one. Get a washcloth or flannel and wet the corners and pop that in the freezer! Then give it to them to suck on. They love this
-Frozen carrot, its sweet and helps when frozen, must monitor them thou. This would be my favorite i think if i was teething, taste really yummy
-I recently opened the pots and pans cupboard for iyla to play in and she loves it, she came across this metal little instrument so she seemed to like chewing on that for a while, metal spoons would have the same effect.
-Your finger, this only works when they have no teeth!! Them little teethies bite hard
-Ive been wearing my big crystal pendant that iyla loves chewing on. I have also heard that mummys can wear something too called ‘teething bling’. Which are BPA free!
It takes a while at the start but you will no when your baby starts teething again, you will no her signs and you will be prepared! Good Luck, we have 2 years of this so we will be pros!

So one thing i always hear from other mums is they dont have enough time to shower or they cant get ready. The one and ONLY thing i refuse to give up in motherhood is HOT SHOWERS!!!! i actually need one to function. So iv had to find out ways to be able to wash my hair, do my face mask in the shower, shave my legs and all that girly fun stuff! This is my solution, if you have a small bathroom and cant put baby on the floor than im sorry but that really sucks! But what i do is i put the bouncy chair (any bouncy chair, any form of chair that baby can sit ) in the bathroom with me and play games with her (pick-a-boo) while im washing my hair having a nice warm shower! By the way she gets every detail while im in there, Ok now mummys washing her hair, she dosnt have a clue what im on about but she loves it!! It helps if they are in a good mood otherwise mumma has to hurry the hell up in there!
Or i usually have a shower with her and then lay a towel on the bathroom floor ( dont worry they wont get a cold it is nice and steamy in there and i have been doing this since she was born) and dry her a little and then i can leave her there while i finish in the shower! Again play little games with her till your done!
